How are points awarded in FIFA World Cup Fantasy?

FIFA World Cup 2022 Fantasy Points Scoring System

Very pleasant surprise that we have some news about how are points scored in FIFA World Cup Fantasy!

It is a similar point scoring system as we are used to from UCL Fantasy and FPL, but yet different. More points for goals and some new features as well!

So, let’s quickly look at how are point awarded in World Cup 2022 Fantasy Football game.

This article is a part of series: How to play World Cup 2022 Fantasy

All players

No news in this section, just the usual stuff:

Goalkeepers

Pretty unlikely, but if your goalkeeper scores a goal, your team will get extra 9 points! It is not 6 as we are used to from FPL or UCL Fantasy.

Another piece of news is a negative point for each additional goal conceded (apart from the first one – that’s still just a clean sheet wipeout).

And clean sheet points for goalkeepers (but not for defenders) are awarded after 70, not 60 minutes.

ActionPoints
Clean Sheet (must have played 70 minutes or more)5
First goal conceded0
Each additional goal conceded-1
Goal Scored9
Penalty save (not including penalty shootouts)3
Every 3 Saves1
plus points for all players

Defenders

A negative point is awarded for each additional goal conceded and a goal scored by a defender is worth 7 points (not 6)! But no points for balls recovered as we are used to from Fantasy Champions League.

A negative point for every goal conceded means that we will often see defenders scoring 0 points. If his team concedes 3 goals, he ends up on 0 points. If his team concedes 4 goals, he ends up on -1 points.

Midfielders

Usual stuff, however, mids will get an extra point for every 3 tackles. That is a similar scoring system feature as we saw in UCL Fantasy where players are awarded points for every 3 balls recovered. We can expect, it will have similar impact on midfielders points output like balls recovered – so it makes cheap defensive mids more attractive.

You can read more about how balls recovered impacted players’ points output in Fantasy Champions League in our articles:

Forwards

Another big change here. Forwards are awarded 5 points for each goal – the same as midfielders! This is big news and a potential game-changer which will have a big impact on the captaincy. (*Update: points for mids have been updated during Matchday 1, now they have 7 points for a goal, what madness!). In Fantasy Premier League, we always favor a premium midfielder as our captain because he earns one more point for a goal than a forward! But this is not the case in FIFA World Cup Fantasy Football game.

So, when forwards get the same amount of points for each goal, they are likely better captaincy options than midfielders.

Another new feature is, that forwards will earn extra point for every 2 shots on target – which could make forwards who shoot often very attractive options. See which forwards had the most shots on target this season.

  1. Only one player has played so far – Kane – 7pts. Match day total shows only 4pts – any idea why? No other players have played so far.
