Penalty and free kicks takers for each team 2023/24
Arsenal
- Main penalty taker: Bukayo Saka
- Backup penalty takers: Odegaard (took a penalty in GW2 against Palace and in GW7 against Bournemouth of the current season with Saka on the pitch). Haverz – took the second penalty in GW7 against Bournemouth. Jesus (took a penalty in GW29 in 2022/23 when Saka was on the bench), Martinelli (took a penalty in GW38 of 2021/22 season with Saka on the pitch, Martinelli won the penalty).
- Direct free kicks: Odegaard, Martinelli
Notes:
- Saka and Odegaard will likely share penalty duties
- Odeggard asked Saka if he could take the penalty against Crystal Palace (source: 90min.com)
- Saka missed a penalty in the 2023/24 preseason game against Barcelona
- Jorginho is also a contender for backup penalty taker given his track record with penalties at Chelsea, he also converted a penalty in the preseason match against MLS All Starts
Aston Villa
- Main penalty taker: Douglas Luis
- Backup penalty takers: Watkins – we expect watkins to be the backup given his penalty record
- Direct free kicks: Douglas Luiz, Digne, Bailey
Notes:
- Douglas Luis has been on penalties in the 2023/24 season in the Premier League and in Europa Conference League as well
- Watkins scored a penalty in preseason (and also missed one)
Bournemouth
- Main penalty taker: Solanke
- Backup penalty takers: Our guess is that it could be Billing.
- Direct free kicks: Billing, Tavernier, Brooks
Notes:
- There were no penalties awarded to Bournemouth in the 2022/23 season which makes our guessing harder
Brentford
- Main penalty taker: Toney
- Backup penalty takers: Mbeumo (Is on penalties in the start of 2023/24 season while Toney is absent. Scored a penalty in GW15 of 2022/23 when Toney was absent, and converted a penalty in a preseason game against Aston Villa)
- Direct free kicks: Toney, Jensen, Mbeumo
Notes:
- Mbeumo could be a perfect FPL asset during Toney’s absence with penalties in his pocket.
Brighton
- Main penalty taker: Joao Pedro – so far scored all Brighton penalties in 2023/24 in Premier League, Europa LEague and preseason – so when on the pitch, he is definitely Brighton’s number one penalty taker
- Backup penalty takers: Pascal Gross (took one penalty in 2021/22 and 4 penalties in the 2020/21 seasons), Welbeck (scored a penalty in an EFL Cup game against Arsenal in 2022/23)
- Direct free kicks: Dunk, March, Gross
Burnley
- Main penalty taker: Rodriguez
- Backup penalty takers: our guess is Bruun Larsen who is on free kicks as well
- Direct free kicks: Laarsen, Gudmundsson, Brownhill
Crystal Palace
- Main penalty taker: Eze
- Backup penalty takers: Edouard (scored a penalty in a 3:0 win against Norwich in the 2021/22 season after a foul on Will Hughes)
- Direct free kicks: Eze, Olise
Notes:
- Zaha was on penalty duties during the last 2 seasons.
Everton
- Main penalty taker: Calvert Lewin
- Backup penalty takers: Maupay (took a penalty in the preseason, was on penalty duties when playing for Brighton),
- Direct free kicks: Danjuma, McNeil, Young
Fulham
- Main penalty taker:Andreas (he took a penalty against Manchester City in GW15 2022/23 when Mitrovič did not play)
- Backup penalty takers: Jimenez (after Mitrovič left Fulham, Jimenez could become their main man. He was on pens at Wolves where he shared penalty duties with Neves), Harry Wilson
- Direct free kicks: Andreas, Willian, Harry Wilson
Notes:
- Mitrovič was on penalties for Fulham until he left the club
Chelsea
- Main penalty taker: After Jorginho, Mount, and Havertz left Chelsea, it is still unsure who will be their number one penalty taker. Our guess is that is likely going to be Nkunku who was the preferred penalty taker at Leipzig,
- Backup penalty takers: Palmer scored a penalty in gameweek 8 against Burnley, Enzo missed a penalty in GW2 against West Ham
- Direct free kicks: Enzo, Nkunku, Chilwell, James, Palmer, Sterling
Liverpool
- Main penalty taker: Salah
- Backup penalty takers: We are predicting it will be Mac Allister when we consider his amazing track record as Brighton’s penalty taker. Szoboszlai could be another in the line, given he used to take penalties for Leipzig when Nkunku was not on the pitch. Nunez scored a penalty against LASK in Europa League but Szoboszlai and Mac Allister were not on the pitch.
- Direct free kicks: Szoboszlai, TAA, Van Dijk (long distance FK)
Notes:
- Darwin Nunez was on penalty duties during his time in Benfica and Gakpo was on penalties for PSV in 2021/22 and the first half of the 2022/23 season.
Luton
- Main penalty taker: Morris took and converted the last 3 penalties for Luton
- Backup penalty takers: likely Adebayo who was on penalty duties during the 2021/22 season. He also took one penalty in the 2022/23 season when Morris was on the pitch but missed it. Woodrow also took one penalty in the previous season (while Morris was on the pitch and Adebayo was not), missed it, and scored a rebound, however, he is not a regular starter for Luton
- Direct free kicks: Barkley, Doughty
Notes:
- We expect Adebayo to remain the main penalty taker for Luton as he has more experience in penalties than Morris
Manchester City
- Main penalty taker: Haaland
- Backup penalty takers: Alvarez (scored a penalty in GW30 when he was subbed on for Haaland, De Bruyne won the penalty, and in one FA Cup game against Chelsea when Haaland and KdB did not play), De Bruyne (has a track record of taking few penalties for City during last 3 years)
- Direct free kicks: De Bruyne, Alvarez, Foden
Manchester United
- Main penalty taker: Bruno Fernandes (took and converted the last 4 Manchester United penalties in competitive matches)
- Backup penalty takers: Rashford
- Direct free kicks: Rashford, Fernandes, Eriksen
Note:
- Bruno is the main Manchester United penalty taker, but we could see Rashford taking a few penalties as well, as we saw the last season when Martial (Martial also won the penalty) and Rashford (Garnacho won the penalty) took “less important” penalties while Bruno was on the pitch
- Mount took and scored 2 penalties for Chelsea during the last 3 seasons
Newcastle
- Main penalty taker: Wilson – scored a penalty in GW5 when Isak did not play
- Backup penalty takers: Isak (scored a penalty in GW7 – Wilson did not play – this season against Burnley and in previous seasons in GW8 and in GW28 when Wilson did not play), Schar (used to take penalties for Basel), Willock (took one penalty for Newcastle against City in 2020/21 but missed it – he did not win the penalty), Joelinton (scored a penalty for Newcastle against City in 2020/21 but it was after he won the penalty)
- Direct free kicks: Trippier, Schar
Nottingham
- Main penalty taker: Gibbs White
- Backup penalty takers: Wood (proven penalty taker, he shared penalty duties at Leeds, Burnley, Australia and Newcastle as well)
- Direct free kicks: Gibbs White, Neco Williams
Note:
- there is still a slight possibility that Johnson could be the preferred penalty taker, as Gibbs White scored the first penalty when Johnson was not on the pitch, and the second one after Johnson was fouled
- Awoniyi shared penalty duties in 1.FC Union Berlin in 2021/22
Sheffield United
- Main penalty taker: Our guess is Norwood as he has a bit more experience with penalties than Brewster, however, he missed a penalty in the last season for Sheffield
- Backup penalty takers: We think Brewster because he took the last penalty for Sheffield (but missed it, Norwood was on the pitch), however, he does not have much experience with penalties on a senior level
- Direct free kicks: Norwood
Tottenham
- Main penalty taker: Son (as he was taking penalties during Kane’s absence in the past)
- Backup penalty takers: Maddison, Richarlison
- Direct free kicks: Maddison, Pedro Porro, Dier
Note:
- After Kane left Spurs, we will likely see Son on pens, and Richarlison (who was taking pens for Everton) or Maddison would be backup takers
West Ham
- Main penalty taker: Benrahma (scored the last 2 West Ham penalties in Premier League, and the last 2 in the Conference League)
- Backup penalty takers: Paqueta (scored a penalty in GW2 against Chelsea after Benrahma was subbed off, also converted one penalty in GW19 last season when Benrahma did not play and another one in Conference League – but Benrahma was on the pitch and Paqueta did not win the penalty)
- Direct free kicks: Ward-Prowse, Benrahma, Paqueta, Bowen
Note:
- Bowen also took 3 penalties for West Ham in the 2022/23 season (2 in Premier League and 1 in the Conference League), but it is unlikely that he would be a backup penalty taker
- Ings could potentially challenge Benrahma for the role of the main penalty taker, as he has a good track record of converting penalties for Southampton and Aston Villa
Wolves
- Main penalty taker: Cunha – he took the penalty in a preseason game against Celtic
- Backup penalty takers: Our guess is Fabio Silva (win, took, and scored one penalty in the 2020/21 campaign for Wolves)
- Direct free kicks: Sarabia, Neto
Note:
- Hwang won, took, and missed a penalty in the FA Cup game
- before their departure, Ruben Neves and Jimenez shared most penalty duties for Wolves

- FBREF – on FBREF, you can find detailed shooting stats, including which players have the most shots from penalties and free kicks
- Flashcore – you check in match details which players were on the pitch when a certain player took a penalty. You can also find results and goalscorers of preseason games.
